The Rock Pool ~ A Feast for the Senses ....

We visited 'The Rock Pool'  at the beginning of April on a beautiful sunny morning, at the invitation of Brenda, the friendly, new owner.
This Mousehole cafe, which boasts a 180 degree view of Mount's Bay, re-opened last August after receiving a complete and much needed face lift.
Since then, it has become a popular haunt with locals and is well frequented by tourists .. it is also fast becoming one of the most popular venues for private parties and photo shoots..

The cafe which stands above a rocky beach has a very organic feel about it ........  I don't mean in a health-food-shop-rustic-kind-of-way ..  more to say that a strong sense of nature resides within the white-washed, wooden clad and mirrored walls, giving a sort of  beach hut, light and airy feel...
Bath chairs decked with sumptuous home made cushions surround the different sized tables... which are currently decorated with pots of  orangey-peachy, pale daffodils.
It's a bit like stumbling into the pages of Coast Magazine ... where a kind of Enid Blyton meets Country Living decor gives this unique place it's distinctive sense of charm ..

'Beach combing finds'.. in the form of sea glass, driftwood and shells sit happily beside rose buds in dainty gold rimmed espresso cups  ... a single primrose re-planted in a matching yellow cup and saucer, basks on the sun drenched windowsill amongst pebbles, candle-lit antique lanterns, fir cones and jugs of fragrant blossoms.

It is as if the beach, the hedgerows and the woods that surround the place have managed to creep surreptitiously into the building , and on being discovered .. welcomed with open arms.

Brenda's ten year collection of over 200 Swan Teapots glint in the Spring sunshine ... they overflow from specially made shelves to the mantel piece ...  The fireplace, a stunning focal point...  is painted in Annie Sloan paint.. which incidentally is available to buy here ...
Pastel patterned china cups lend make-shift nests for speckled chocolate eggs.... while Lindt Bunnies and fluffy chicks complete the retro 'still life ' on the counter..

Old style prints of the local area and a wonderful collection of mismatched Staffordshire china complete the eclectic mix which gives this unique interior an overall  fresh-yet-vintage feel ....

After taking time to look over the extensive range of Welbeck Tiles, and the locally made vintage style jewellery from 'Jo-jo and Betty', I decided to treat myself to a few little gifts.. Well it would have rude not too ....

Our generous Cream Tea soon arrived on a slice of painted tree trunk.....(see picture).. posing as a tray, upon which sat miniature tea cups filled with whole fruit jam and clotted cream next to pots of coffee and earl grey tea........ and just as we tucked into a plate of scones with our pretty pastel bone handled knives, we spotted two dolphins playing in the bay below  .... I mean ... Seriously !!! ..What are the chances ?

I cannot recommend a visit to the Rock Pool enough .... Whether you sit inside or outside on the patio... the breathtaking view is inescapable.. you lucky, lucky,  people!

The all day menu describes a variety of hot and cold drinks ..including mouthwatering ice-cream shakes and a pint mug of builders tea! To eat, there are filled muffins and bagels, cream teas, a delicious tempting, display of cakes and what's more you can 'take away' ... so it is perfect for impromptu picnics down on the rocks and swimming pool below ...

P.S. (There is also a whisper of an alcohol license ....  and really .... I couldn't think of a more desirable place to enjoy a chilled aperitif on a warm summers evening ..... )
